Landlord discovers cannabis farm at rented flat in South Wales

A landlord has described her shock and horror after the home she rented out had been transformed into a cannabis farm.

The owner of the terraced house in Treforest, Rhondda Cynon Taf, could not believe her eyes when she discovered up to 400 plants cramped into the property after returning from a holiday in Scotland.

Deborah Young, who is originally from Sydney, Australia, also found her property filled with lights and equipment to grow the class B drug, while the windows had been boarded up.

She told the press: “Upon returning to the property, we only got as far as the back door, but we went no further. I was in shock. I could see all of the branches littered all over the floor.

“It’s very frustrating. I’ve never seen anything like this in 40 years.

“I was told there were 137 plant pots in the living room, and altogether probably around 300 or 400 pots in the whole house.”

The landlord, who owns four other properties in the Treforest area, is now planning to sell the house, located on Birchwood Avenue, after unearthing the cannabis factory.

She added: “That’s my feeling, just to clear it completely. It’s ruined the house. I guess this is the type of thing that goes on around here. There could be loads of these factories in the area.

“There are fewer and fewer students in Treforest despite the University of South Wales being here, as more and more want to move to Cardiff. There are loads of ‘for sale’ and ‘to let’ signs if you look around.

“The incident hasn’t put me off the area as such, because this is the first time I have seen anything like it, but it’s certainly put me off the house.”

Devon and Cornwall Police, who are leading on the case, said an investigation is ongoing but that no arrests or charges have been made.
